It's hard to generalize, John. Many new cars had underframes and
trucks painted black, but there were exceptions; Union Pacific, for
example, specified oxide red on the entire car, whether new or
repainted. And many RRs made a practice of repainting entire cars
mineral red, including underframes and trucks. Of course, after a
car had been in service for a year or two, it didn't matter what
color the underframe was painted as oil from the truck journals
combined with trackside dirt and dust to coat the entire underframe a
grimy black. So what you're doing is okay except perhaps on a model
that represents a brand new or newly repainted car that hasn't been
out of the paint shop for very long.
