Re: SHPX 13141 help

Hi Ed,

Many thanksf for the SHPX data! The Naugatuck Valley (in CT on the New Haven) where the photo was taken was the location of many chemical and rubber companies. There was a company called Naugatuck Chemical associated with US Rubber which became Uniroyal, etc., and I've tracked down some history, but not sure if this is the location of the photo, yet.

The tank appears insulated in the photo since I can see the end and I'm not surprise it's 10,000 gallon.

Is there a resource for finding out to whom SHPX cars were assigned in the 1950's? I've got a couple of leads I can follow up with on US Rubber, but that darned herald on the tank car is driving me batty!

If there's anyone on list who thinks they can help please let me know. I can scan the photo in question if my description of the herald sounds familiar.

Regards,
Peter Ness

Peter,
Unless the car was renumbered at some point (unlikely), SHPX 13141 was
a 10,000-gallon ICC-103 insulated Type 27 car built in 1940. It was one
of 53 cars in ACF lot 2141A, series SHPX 13123-13175. The builder's
photo from this lot number, SHPX 13125, built 11-40, was painted black
with white stencils and plainly lettered for Shippers' Car Line. The
cars were equipped with heater pipes for use in asphalt service. Hope
this helps.
