One of the AAR recommendations / requirements for AB brake installations was that the control valve was to NOT be placed below a door, where trucks backing up to the car to load / unload might damage the valve. Sounds like the builder took this to heart. Other roads installed a steel bash plate to protect the valve when it was convenient to locate it below the door opening.
