Perhaps Lois Lenski's award-winning children's book "Strawberry Girl,"
set in upstate Florida some time prior to WWII. The family in the book
had neighbors who raised free-ranging cattle. Lois Lenski researched
her books pretty carefully, and has written some for many parts of the
country. Not bad "background flavor" research for a layout, as are a
lot of children's books written DURING the period you're interested in.

Childrens books written ABOUT a period, OTOH, are often full of errors.
