Re: "Super-Giant" Reefers

These cars are essentially modeled by the ancient Athearn 50 ft riveted side reefers,
although there are technical errors (mainly roof and ends). If you're willing to turn them
into "flat kits" they can be greatly improved, as far as accuracy goes.

Frozen Foods are becoming so popular in American diet that the Pacific Fruit Express is adding 200 "super-giant" reefers to its railroad-car fleet which are especially designed for the transportation of frozen foods. The PFE is owned jointly by the Union Pacific and Southern Pacific railroads. In PFE territory the carloadings of frozen foods have nearly doubled in five years.

Does anyone know the car numbers of these "super-giant" reefers?
PFE used this term for all its heavily insulated 52-foot cars, starting with R-70-2 in 1934. The 200-car group referred to are the R-70-9 mechanical cars, PFE 300138 to 300337. The history and photos, of course, are all in the PFE book.
