Re: One less car on the layout....removing paint on Resin models

Joseph

I have grit blasted many(more than 5 ) resin cars from various mfgs to remove paint/decals/weathering. I have used both alum oxide and glass beads at pressures up to 60psi in a Northcoast Hobbies blasting booth. Rich Remiarz has the latest example, a Sunshine CMO USRA rebuild that I had painted in the yellow and green scheme(too new for my layout in that scheme, so I sold it to Rich, who had me blast it so he can paint it BCR, now he is going to paint it yellow and green! go figure!!) No worries, other than loosing poorly attached parts....

THANKS VERY MUCH! For this timely information. I have a Sunshine ATSF dry
ice car that I painted incorrectly and had planned to strip it. I hadn't
got around to testing with my stock of Chameleon yet, but it sounds like if
I had tested on a bit of hidden area it might not have revealed that the
small detail is so sensitive.

Has anyone actually used grit blasting to strip a resin model? What's been
your experience? I've never used one, though I have access if I need it.
But it is my impression that the resin is pretty soft compared to plastic
and the grit might chew into it pretty quickly.

Maybe I'll just accept the incorrect color on this car and leave it alone.

Rick

So, what is recommended for stripping resin models (besides grit-blasting)?
I have an SC&F car that I need to strip (the Polly-Scale Armor Yellow has a
run in it).

I ruined two UP models, one Sunshine, one Westerfield, using Chameleon

from Resin.

Cast urethane doesn't take kindly to alcohol immersion, and the first listed
ingredient in Chameleon is propanol.

Some years ago we made some cast resin prototypes for a medical equipment
manufacturer. Someone in the customer's office thought they were production
parts and put them in an alcohol autoclave to sterilize them. A few minutes
in hot alcohol vapor turned them into bloated mush.
