This is a common opinion, and perhaps appropriate with today's paints. But in my opinion, not true at all in the period of this list. Roof shots in the 1950s do not show that many cars with much paint failure on roofs. I discussed this, along with modeling techniques for a LITTLE paint failure, in a post to my blog about car roofs.
