Jon, if the coupler height is correct with the shim and the car is higher than some of your other hoppers.  Then this hopper must be a different design and maybe was made higher.  I do not have the cars you are talking about, but know I have seen different height hoppers while watching trains.

While putting in .088 wheelsets in the trucks I noticed a thin
washer on the truck mounting booster and the screws were not tight.
Thought this was to shim up the coupler but with other cars the hopper
seems high. Has anyone else noticed this.
