Actually, much of the kaolin for coating paper was used in New Engand and the northern Midwest. The central Georgia region was the primary source.

In the Southeast, a lot of kaolin was used in papermaking. My understanding is that kaolin is what gives paper that smooth finish, as opposed to newsprint, etc.

I am not a C of G modeler but have found this thread most informative.  Since I didn't know what kaolin was, nor what it could be used for, I had to resort to Google as my friend.  http://www.georgiaencyclopedia.org/articles/science-medicine/kaolin   So now I know it is most commonly found in the US in Georgia and is used most often in the production of white china.
