The group built at the NP's Laurel Shops had an Apex brake.
 
While equipment diagrams are not always definitive on details, the brake is shown in the sketch here in NP freight equipment diagram #122.  (Unfortunately, the diagrams on the web site are not listed by diagram number.)  The dimensional data on the diagram should be reliable.

One of the postings on this car stated that the early cars used the Miner Ideal handbrake.  What
handbrake did the later cars use?

And don't use 70's MoW photos to model the cars in the steam era.  Many of the cars, trucks, and car numbers were changed later in the 60's.
