While I've seen model railroad structures that are open to view, but you know, I've never seen a prototype building that was unless it was just hit either by a hurricane or an earthquake! ; <
As far as fascia structures go, I personally feel that they are better, but it can be a challenge to see the reporting marks and railroad name on the cars on the other side of fascia.
One other option would be to just model the loading dock (if any) just have spot indicators on the fascia or layout, like Keith Jordan has done on his excellent The Patch model railroad.
