GN 8900-8999 were still listed as hoper bottom cars in the April, 1942 ORER, with 97 remaining in the series.

As general service boxcars, they might have gone anywhere in the US rail system, but probably not while carrying coal in hopper mode. Given the small size of the group among the thousands of similar-sized DS GN boxcars, the odds of seeing one would be small. Older boxcars on granger roads might spent much of the year in storage until needed for a seasonal surge. Grain and head-of-lakes coal were strongly seasonal and would tend to keep them on home rails.
