PRR X30 was Re: Re: Slightly Off-Topic


The PRR X30 was built as an experimental boxcar and assigned to the LaFrance factory in Elmira, NY.  It was capable of carrying on aerial extension ladder truck.  There was only one of these built.

Somewhere I have a photo of the X30 being unloaded with an extension aerial ladder truck in Island Avenue Yard, Pittsburgh, PA.

The PRR X30 must have been for ladder trucks or something special. Many
railroads had end door 40 foot and 50 foot box cars for long loads such as
fire trucks, buses, or whatever. I have a scan of a wrecked end door CV box
(it appears to be a single sheathed car) with a fire truck inside.
