Re: Kits are now for sale

John:
The new Yarmouth kit represents cars in series 297500-297799 built in 1923 with 13-6 door openings.
With all due respect to you and to Ian, this statement is not at all consistent with the evidence in the relevant ORERs.
In 1926, the CP owned a total of 1731 class XA cars across just six series, four of which were 41 ft cars of ~40 tons capacity.  These included two virtually identical "sister" classes, 297500-297799 and 297800-298099, 300 cars each, the only difference being a small difference in CAPY.  None of the XAs had doors wider than 10-0 at this time, consistent with the builder's photo of 297500 on the YMW webpage.
Apart from a very minor adjustment in CAPY, these two series remain unchanged through 1930, with a total of 599 cars.
It is not until the 1935 ORER that we see a reduction in the original series (down to 500 cars), and the appearance of a dimensionally identical series with 12-0 doors:  100 cars n 296800-296899.
In 1940, the original series are down to 181 cars total, and we first see the first appearance of what are obviously the same cars with 13-3 doors:  299 cars in 296300-296599.  Car 296390, which is the model shown on the YMV site, is from this group of cars.

The distribution of cars across the three door widths is largely the same in 1945, but I have no idea what happened thereafter.
This was the basis of my earlier statement that the 600 relevant cars with 10-0 doors persisted for a better part of a decade before rebuilding with wider doors began.

Below is a partial list of CPR 40' steel-frame auto cars extracted from the extensive roster list created by Ian Cranstone from ORER entries.. The 8th column is the door width. The new Yarmouth kit represents cars in series 297500-297799 built in 1923 with 13-6 door openings. Note that this number series were no longer in revenue service after April 1957.In 1956 some of this series were renumbered to 40347-40435 for CPR company service.  The numerous series of CPR steel-frame auto cars had many variations included the door-opening width, side sill shape and ladder type. Any surviving original arch bar trucks were replaced before 1939 when arch bar trucks were banned for interchange in North America.  John Riddell
