Re: Getting the proper ORER

Fran,
You've gotten good advice from all the previous posters. No source of information is perfect as Steve stated with his experience with the Santa Fe stock cars. How close do you want to get? And for which roads? For an overall fleet that includes foreign ( not home road) cars, the October or January issues after your modeling date are probably your best bet. If you want to narrow it down to specific car numbers for a given road, the car construction records or live list register (the actual list, not a summary) can tell you what that road documented as truth for individual pieces of equipment. I have the Westerfield electronic edition of the January 1945 ORER and Official Guide as well as paper copies of October 45 and April 43. Those give me a very good idea of what was out there on my Christmas 1944 modeling date. I'm sure I 'll get something wrong with a "foreign" road as I know about several discrepancies in the Santa Fe listings. But the Jan 45 ORER is close enough to reality to give me a meaningful guide for fleet composition of the 2/3 of the total fleet that are foreign road cars. For my home road, Santa Fe, I'm supplementing the ORER with information from the live list registers that have been preserved at Temple. Those have helped me figure out which Bx-11 &12 box cars had full height (12") roof extensions and which had half height (6") and which stayed in the original configuration.
Have fun on your journey.
