Time Freights & Red Ball Freights

I understand that a practice dating to before 1900 was that many freight trains had schedules, and were authorized for the mainline by timetable authority. Some of the more important, time-sensitive trains were called "Time Freights".

And some railroads had expedited trains and even individual freight cars (with placards) designated as "Red Ball".

Was there any significant or essential difference between trains that were "Time Freights" and trains that were "Red Ball" or were these terms synonymous?
