"D" means one wear, cast iron wheels were applied to the cars. The D really isn't part of the car's number; it's an early car accounting notation from the days when "modern" appliances were new to the industry. It's also railroad specific to the Lake Shore.

I have looked on the CASO web site and don't see any information about a letter "D" preceding the road number.
