Thank you Eric for the very interesting link. What a wonderful model scene that MEC unloading operation would make!
 
I notice the page has a line that reads "Bancroft & Martin Discharging Plant, Livonia, South Portland, 3/26/1946, author's collection (click for 300KB .jpeg)". When I go and click for the 300KB jpeg I get the dreaded "404 Not Found". For those who are interested, the correct link for the 300KB jpeg can be found in the line below...

Well, not a gon-to-box conversion but similar: in 1929, the B&M rebuilt 100 steel gondolas into their 29000 series pulp racks
with two side doors.  I have a bit of a writeup on them here:
