It can go the other way, too. In 1937 when the Soo Line gave up owning their reefers and began leasing from URTX, they rebuilt the newest reefers, Haskell & Barker, 1921, into flatcars, adding channel steel side sills to the fishbelly underframe.

I seem to recall reading in the trade press that Mather had a plan to rebuild surplus stockcars into gondolas, but the AAR would not approve the resulting sample car for interchange, so it wasn't done.
