Re: Very early USRA hopper clone


I looked up #8703 in the ACF Lot list, and it was ordered as a single 55-ton car from Berwick on July 16, 1919. It was pretty typical for small industrial orders to piggyback on a larger group that the builder was working on at the time. I would assume there was some cost savings in doing so. AC&F's USRA hoppers were lots 8579 and 8580 on May 24, 1918, split between Berwick and Huntington.
