 The recording thermometer was placed in cartons or boxes of produce. The thermometer used was known as a maximum reading type, that is, the liquid in the thermometer went up with a increase in temperature but did not go down when the temperature when down. Think of a fever thermometer.  This feature allowed the car line and shipper know what maximum temperature was experienced by the product being shipped. Regards...Jerry Albin
