I  still print b&w negatives and the glossy side had better be on the top if the resulting print is to be correct with lettering running forward instead of backwards. The exceptions sometimes occur with copy negatives.

If I remember correctly from my B&W negative printing days many, many years ago there was a glossy side and a dull side to B&W negs. I don't remember which side is which for sure but I think glossy is the "viewing" side. No enlarging necessary.

Without enlarging, it is often difficult to tell which side is “up” on a flat negative (experience!). I assume these to be 2.25 x 3.25 or some such size. The best thing to do if unsure is enlarge after the scan and look for something to prove you did it right. If it is backward, it is simple to reverse the image with Photoshop without rescanning.

I have a question about photos in library collections. Why are they often printed backwards like these two?
