I seem to recall reading that when SLSW initiated their Blue Streak Merchandise service that there were some difficulties because of SP's relatively slow frt service. I can't recall the reference as of now but if someone else doesn't, I will find it.
Yeah, well, it was the SSW that went bankrupt, not the SP. SSW by many measures was faster and more efficient (e.g. car miles per car day about 2x the industry average in the 1950's). So speed ain't everything, and it might just be much ado about nothing.
