very interesting. But how did it work? Of course I can imagine a knives blade doesn't like sand, but if you take a sharp stone (and I guess these weren't rare even then... :-)) the sand wouldn't be any obstacle?

The NP included sand in it's depot paint formulas to stop the "little darlings" from carving their initials into the wood. Graffiti isn't new, the form just changes.
