The orange and black Hooker paint scheme is shown in builder photos from before World War II.

Of course the photos are all black & white, making this less obvious. :-)

Yesterday someone asked when the orange paint scheme was applied to Hooker tank cars. I'm not sure anyone answered. A clue is in the photo of GATX 24784 at http://cdm17061.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/singleitem/collection/p17061coll21/id/32704/rec/42 . The car appears to be new, and the date on the tank reads 9-53. Now this may not be one of the first cars in the orange paint, but it is a start.
