PFE 48674 was an R-40-23 ice bunker reefers built in 1947 by Pacific Car & Foundry, part of series 48203-48702. Other R-40-23 reefers in other number series were built by AC&F, General American and Pullman. In total, 5,000 R-40-23 cars were built. This was the largest class of PFE steel-sheathed refrigerator cars. By 1972 there were still 445 of these cars in service.
