Railroad related stock yards ranged from loading pens where cattle arrived on their hooves, to intermediate feed and water stops, mandated by Federal regulation for how many hours stock could be in cars before they had to be off loaded, to yards where the cattle were sold for slaughter.  At one time,  the MILW Road's resting pens in Aberdeen, SD were reported to be the largest in the world.
