ATSF 49760 was built in 1960 at the Topeka shops, one of 500 Fe-31 cars in the 49500-49999 series. There were eleven cars in the15778-15766 series and ten cars in the 49000-49909 series.
Each car in the larger group had a staggered sliding door and a plug door. The other twenty-one cars had staggered double doors.
This class and the Fe-32 class were the first Fe cars to be equipped with roller bearing trucks and cushion underframes. Fe-31 cars carried the "Shock Control" lettering and the Fe-32 cars were lettered "Super Shock Control".
By 1991 only one car in this class remained on the roster.
