Big in the post-war were many products produced for manufacturers that made things like wire insulation, vinyl, flooring, synthetic leathers, synthetic rubbers, etc.
There were manufacturers all over the country receiving cars like this. More than we realize.
Pittsburgh Coke and Chemical, Pennsylvania Industrial Chemical Co., and USSteel’s Clairton Byproducts plant, in the Mon/Ohio River valley, were all shipping out chemicals used in “plastics”. Hundreds of carloads a month.

Info I have is " Pittsburgh PA: Pittsburgh Coke and Chemical railroad car being filled up at the plant on Neville Island. Plasticizers are used for the production of flexible PVC products such as cables, pipes and hoses, leather cloth, shoes, film for packaging. Copyright:Brady Stewart Studio"
