RE: patch panel on end Note there also appears to be a seam on the bottom end panel (same place as on the top end panel) Hard to tell w/o the whole end, but I'll speculate: ends were from a wider car and had to be cut down to fit width of this car? Joints were staggered (right side of end on top/bottom panel, left side of end for middle panel)?
