I did it on an operating session on the Comanche & Indian Gap Live Steam layout, quite fun

I've actually poled HO cars in the past operating on a friend's layout. I was in a bind on time and used one of the bamboo skewers we used for uncoupling to spot a car on an adjacent track. Got some odd looks from some of the other guys but hey it worked! ;)

The TRAINS March 1993 article also quotes an ICC official who states, "If the push pole was officially outlawed I have no record of that fact…"

Again, individual railroads may have banned poling and perhaps certain states. But I have never seen documented proof that the Federal Government did so as some have claimed.

A while back (don't remember when, but over a year ago) I asked if/when polling was outlawed in the OPSIG group, and got the same answer - it was never outlawed by the ICC, but most railroads banned it - probably due to combination of pressure from insurance companies and unions, and some "think" it was outlawed in certain states - but couldn't remember for sure.

And as expected, there was more than one tale of it still happening even after being banned.
