I use newsprint for rolled roofing. I spray a sheet using a rattle can. Green, primer red, and black are rolled roofing colors I've seen the most. I cut the sheet into strips about three scale feet wide and use rubber cement or canopy glue to install on the roof. I use a black Sharpie marker to add tar lines at the edges of the strips.

Here's an S scale AT&SF tool house I scratchbuilt. I sprayed primer red onto newsprint for the rolled roof material here.

Steve is correct. these are company houses and usually would use the rolled roofing. I was attempting just to go one step better with the 3 tab black asphalt shingles.
