Steve and all-
Most cars don’t have diagonals outboard of the body bolster.  Double sheathed cars may have light straps but they are likely there to tie the ends to the sides and don’t form part of the car truss. 
Not unusual or suspicious at all…

Thanks guys, and Steve, those photos are helpful. It looks like I purchased a foobie. I wonder if it can be repurposed as it seems different from the HO stock cars I've seen.
