Bruce,
Nice job! At some point I have to dig my kit out and build it. Thanks for the inspiration!

Folks,

I finished up a Des Plaines C&EI "Buy War Bonds" car. This is a plastic kit with a Des Plaines Viking roof and 8-rung ladders included in the kit.

Based on discussion many years ago on this list, and my interpretation of a fairly dark exposure of 64150 with this scheme, I painted the doors black, There was some issue with whether the roof was black, but I elected to paint it and the running board box car red.

I added a Yarmouth wood running board with etched brass supports to the Viking roof, and a Tangent Klassing brake wheel and gearbox. The uncoupling lever was bent from 0.012" brass wire and the wheels were replaced with Rapido "code 88" semi-scale wheels.

Matching the paint was a bit of a challenge, but I think I got close with a mix of German Grey, Red Leather, and camo medium brown.

Weathering was with oils, enamal panel seam wash, and acrylics. Chalk mark decals came from several different Sunshine sets.

This is the closest I've come to a straight out of the box box build in a while! 🙂

Regards,
Bruce
