Normally such modifications are noted in the Official Railway Equipment Register, as interior heights, exterior heights and cubic capacities all are increased, but a quick look suggests that these conversions were not reported, nor apparently the assigned commodity. Wood chip service is one possibility, but a large number of early Otis cars received side extensions for coke service.
