Earl;
I can't tell you from personal experience about the WW2 period, but in
later
years the Pennsy had an active interchange of N&W hoppers in the area
around
Wheeling and Mingo Junction on the Panhandle. They were loaded with coal
and destined for the mills in SE Ohio/WV. I remember large numbers of
both
N&W and C&O hoppers on the PRR in that area. If you look at the
concentration of rail lines of these two in WV and eastern Kentucky, you
can
see why. The area immediately west of Pgh had a lot of hoppers from the
P&LE, B&O, Montour, P&WV, and even NYC and RDG. Aside from coal, on Lines
West in that area there was huge traffic in ore, limestone and other flux
stones, and additives used in the iron and steel-making process.

Gents;
During WW2, would you find any N&W N2 hoppers on PRR main lines or
branches
west of Pittsburg?? Would coal users along the PRR routes out here get in
hoppers from foreign roads??

I assume that era of N2s had the smaller 17" N&W letters??
