fad"
during the time of the peak silk traffic,
accounting both for
its extreme priority and for its demise.
The priority didn't have to do with any fad, but
with the fact that the silk had some sort of
limited life span before it decayed in some way.
The fresher it was, the better.

Any fad might have raised the value of the silk,
but I think the reason it became not such a hot
ticket had to do with the development of
alternative materials.
