Re: Stock car decks

Marty,

Not so on the WP. Many, though not all, of the WP's double-deck stock
cars (Harriman S-40-8 clones) were assigned to Salt Lake City hog
service. Some single-deck cars were also used in this service, but
double-deck cars were predominant according to Jim Eager's WESTERN
PACIFIC COLOR GUIDE TO FREIGHT AND PASSENGER EQUIPMENT (Scotch Plains,
N.J., Morning Sun Books, Inc.: 2001).

Kind regards,

My understanding is that pigs were not shipped in double-decked cars, or at
least if they were the pigs were kept on the single deck. I've heard the animals
didn't "like" being in a double-deck car -- the pigs on the lower deck would get
stressed by the fact that their cousins were up above them. I've also heard that
adult pigs were really too much weight for the upper deck.

Most double-deck stock cars I know of were used to haul sheep on two decks.

I guess that means we need a "sheep" sound unit for the new stock car,
hey???
