Nice technique!

Yes, I should have said that. I cannot begin to fathom how they did some of
this stuff.

BTW, if anyone is experimenting with "fool the eye" techniques, drop me a
line. I would love to learn more.

I use techniques that definitely tie themselves to all of these

I have used tromp l'oeil to simulate rivet/bolt heads, drain
holes, and even
bulges in gondola sides. I can't say that I know how to do it
however! I just found that there were certain things that I could
simulate without some sort of illusion.
Early in my HOn3 life (1961-1986) while contemplating how to make
the chains on the operating rods of a scratch-built D&RGW drop-
bottom gon, it dawned on me that they didn't have to _be_ chains,
they just had to _look like_ chains. I don't remember how many links
per inch were in the finest available chain at that time, but it was
still grossly oversize. A 4' length of 0.008" tinned copper wire,
doubled, with one doubled end in a bench vise and the other spun in
a pin vise until the desired "links per inch" was reached, gave me
enough "chain" to do all the operating rods on six gons, with enough
left over for the slack chains connecting the hand brake rods to the
brake levers. And it was much easier to work with than loose links.

One of my long-term goals is to be
able to learn more from the old masters.
Oh, I'm sorry. I thought you said "old b*st*rds".
