Some processes need kernals of a certain size, oatmeal being one.
Dist = Distilate - close to kerosene, about 1 cut below.

Having been a control chemist in a flour mill, to me "shorts" means the left overs of the flour mill run of ground wheat . It was called red dog by the mill people because of it's reddish color. It was fine ground flour, bran that could not be separated from each other.
