We just discussed this topic on the Passenger Car List. After running through the same range of suggestions presented here, the most straightforward was to order it from McMaster Carr. Go to their web site and search for sheet lead. A 12" x 36" x 0.042" strip will cost $25 plus a not inconsequencial shipping charge.
