Who knew "vice" was a preposition. This fifty-year-old
American egghead never saw the word used this way.

Do you pronounce it vIs, vI-sEE, or vEE-chAY?

It's not a typo. "Grimy vice [instead of] paint"
means that the roof
of the car is so dirty that it's very difficult to
tell what the
orignal color was, whether C&O's version of boxcar
red, black car
cement, or unpainted.
