other uses for stock cars

I have sen photos of C&O stock cars being loaded with coke in the 1890s. You
would thinks that the not-always-completely-quenched coke could cause
problems, and sometimes did set wooden cars on fire.

Despite this problem, C&O converted 36' wooden double sheathed box cars from
1911 (Standard Steel Car) into coke cars by removing the roofs in 1937. These
were retired by 1940, but another batch of similar conversions was done
beginning in '39.

Since coke is light, the larger volume of house cars was useful, despite the
threat of fire.
