Back in my baking models days, I always left the oven door cracked open
(broiler position) to help with the temperature swings. It also served as a
reminder to the rest of the household that something was up. Constantly
answering the inevitable questions "Why is the oven on" many times was much
preferable to a single "ARRRRGH!"
