There have been several interesting discussions on this list regarding
utilization of reefers. The June 1992 MR has an article on BAR "spud
haulers". While discussing reefer usage in the '50's, the author
(Allan Houghton) states "During the spring and summer months..... much
of the reefer fleet was was leased to PFE for transcontinental
service." Photos show 40' steel plug door reefers. The article
states that there were also many insulated boxcars, which were used in
paper and newsprint service during the potato off-season.
