I did not think that California kept the title to its vacant land
like Texas did. We had foreign embassies, a standing army, etc. for
nine years - a true foreign country, recognized by France, etc.
Texas gave the federal government that part of the lands of the
Republic in what later became New Mexico and Colorado in exchange for
the payment of the debts incurred by the Republic. California and a
few other western states became U.S. territories as a result of Texas
statehood and resulting war with Mexico.
