The value in Stauffer's books is in the photos- which in aggregate are indeed hard to find most anywhere else without a lot of work.

Far too often, Staufer had never a clue as where the border lay between in-your-face political and social comments, blatant unsupported opinion on any subjects, and good solid data relating to the railroad subject at hand- and he made lavish use of this ignorance. As a result, the writing can be abysmal and/or stupifyingly shallow, to say the very least- and frustratingly, I have never thought that he actually ever cared.

That said :-) , I value each and every one of his books, if for the only reason that there is nothing else out there to substitute- and the photos are pretty absorbing.
