Hi Folks

Here are the revised DS/SS/Steel splits, 1945, and 1950, for box and
auto cars in interchange service on the ATSF, with data provided by
Richard Hendrickson added in. Thank you, Richard, for providing this
information in such a thorough fashion.

January 1945:
ATSF_____%____Number
DS_____17.2%____6,076
SS_____21.7%____7,649
Steel_____46.6%____16,435
Panel_____14.4%____5,089
Known_____99.9%____35,249
Unknown_____0.1%____28
Total_____100.0%____35,277

July 1950:
ATSF_____%____Number
DS_____1.3%____445
SS_____21.7%____7,549
Steel_____69.0%____24,037
Panel_____7.9%____2,754
Known_____99.9%____34,785
Unknown_____0.1%____42
Total_____100.0%____34,827

These tables exclude DS cars in the series 40000-40024, class Bx-25,
which the ORER describes as "Brick", on the assumption that they are
not in interchange service.

The ATSF retired over 90% of its double sheathed cars, and an even
100 of its single sheathed. It nearly halved its "panel" fleet, but
increased its steel cars by almost 50%. Overall, it had a minor
decline.

The DS/SS split went from 44% DS, 56% SS in 1945 to 6% DS, 94% SS in
1950.

Best wishes,
