Like you, I am building for a future layout. As such I can pretty much set my own pace at building what I need. Heck man, I am an engineer for NS and really don't have a lot of time at home in the first place. However, where ever possible I still purchase kits and still place them on shelf to be built.

Maybe for some, but I would rather assemble a well-made kit than open
a box and put a model on the track. Of course, I don't have any track
to put it on, so that could have something to do with my preference
for kits vs. rtr.
