They seem to work fine without a gloss coat and I have used them on bare plastic with no problem... which certainly goes against conventional wisdom!
The logic of using a gloss coat is to eliminate the possibility of the decal "silvering" due to the flat finish which doesn't allow air to escape....wouldn't applying them to unpainted styrene be the same as applying them to a gloss finish?
